Identify what unmoderated means
An unmoderated activity has no live researcher guiding you through each step. You work through the provider's instructions and submit the requested response before the deadline. User Interviews' format documentation distinguishes these tasks from straightforward surveys. Check the actual activity rather than assuming every task is just a questionnaire.
Look for written answers, interactions with a website or prototype, audio commentary and any camera requirement. A flexible start time does not necessarily mean you can pause indefinitely or resume later. Read the permitted completion window and whether the task needs one uninterrupted sitting. Ask before starting if the instructions do not explain that constraint.
Prepare the environment and device
Use the requested device and check the provider's supported browser or app instructions. Test the microphone and any required camera with a permitted setup check. Make sure the task link is the expected destination. Avoid adding unfamiliar extensions or changing security settings merely because an unexplained prompt appears.
Practical preparation checklist: charged device, stable connection, quiet space, working input devices, closed private material and enough time for submission. Follow the provider's instructions if these differ. A preparation check reduces avoidable interruptions; it cannot guarantee that a recording or upload succeeds. Know the official support route before the task starts so you can report a failure accurately.
Give think-aloud feedback when requested
UserTesting's participant guidance explains that spoken thoughts help researchers understand actions and expectations. Follow the specific brief: some activities request that commentary, while others need a different response. Do not add narration to a task that explicitly asks for silence.
Example: when looking for a filter, describe what you expected its label to mean and whether the result matched that expectation. You are explaining your experience, not auditioning as a designer. It is fine to be uncertain about an interface. Read instructions attentively and avoid rehearsing flattering reactions or claiming you completed a step you could not complete.
Handle ambiguity and technical failures
Without a moderator, a confusing task can be harder to clarify immediately. Use the help instructions supplied with the activity. If no answer is available, describe the uncertainty honestly in the permitted response or contact the provider. Do not substitute a different task and assume it satisfies the brief.
Practical failure note: task reference, device, failure stage, visible error and whether submission was confirmed. Avoid screenshots that reveal private accounts or confidential prototypes unless the provider permits them. Do not repeatedly restart or submit duplicate responses without instruction. The provider decides how incomplete activities and technical issues affect completion and incentive eligibility.
Check what the recording can reveal
A recorded task may capture more than the interface under study. Read the recording permissions and close private tabs, notifications and unrelated files. Check whether the task needs a real account or supplies a demonstration environment. If a real account is required, clarify what information may appear before opening it.
Use the screen-sharing privacy checklist to prepare, and the video consent guide for recording questions. Do not share passwords or authentication codes. If the task requires something beyond your privacy boundary, pause and ask about an alternative rather than assuming payment makes the disclosure necessary.
Finish the submission process deliberately
Read the final instructions, allow the upload or submission process to complete and check for the provider's receipt or status. Keep a permitted reference without copying confidential task content. Submitted, reviewed and paid are different states. The provider's completion and distribution terms determine what happens next.
Practical finish checklist: required responses completed, recording uploaded if requested, completion reference noted and pending status recorded accurately. If there is no confirmation, contact the provider with the stage reached. Compare surveys and interviews if you would prefer a different interaction style. Scoutela helps with discovery, while the provider controls selection, task review and incentive payment.
Common questions
Can I complete every unmoderated task at any time?
Check its deadline, time limit and whether one uninterrupted session is required.
Should I hide confusion to give better feedback?
No. Follow the brief and describe your actual experience, including uncertainty where relevant.
