Read the permitted device category
Online describes how an activity is delivered; it does not specify which device is suitable. A survey may contain wide tables, timed interactions or software that requires a computer. Opening the first page successfully does not establish that the rest of the activity can be completed on your phone.
Prolific's device guidance lets researchers specify desktop, mobile or tablet requirements. Follow the requirement on the particular study. Do not use a browser's desktop-view setting as evidence that a phone meets a desktop requirement. If your device category is unclear, ask before beginning the activity.
Check the whole mobile setup
Before starting, identify the operating system, browser, audio, microphone, camera and installation requirements. A phone can support one required feature while lacking another. An app invitation and a mobile-browser questionnaire can also involve different setup steps, account permissions and upload behaviour.
User Interviews' activity descriptions include more than simple surveys. Read whether the task needs interaction or recording. Charge your device, check available storage when needed and make sure the connection is suitable for the entire task. Avoid beginning a recording just before you expect to lose connectivity or battery power.
Choose a setting where you can attend
Portability can make participation convenient, but it does not make every spare moment suitable. A moving journey, shared queue or noisy room may prevent you from reading carefully or answering privately. If the activity requires audio, consider whether you can hear prompts without disturbing others or exposing private content.
Hypothetical example: a phone-compatible questionnaire includes a detailed comparison of service terms. Completing it while waiting in a quiet room may be workable; completing it while repeatedly boarding transport may not be. Choose an uninterrupted window that fits the instructions. Do not participate while driving or doing another activity that needs your full attention.
Protect what mobile capture can expose
A mobile screen recording can reveal notifications, messages and information from other apps. Prepare the device using the permissions and recording instructions supplied by the provider. Close unrelated material and consider the account names or identifiers that might appear during the requested task.
The screen-sharing privacy checklist applies to mobile capture as well as computers. Ask whether a supplied demonstration account is available if a task would expose a private real account. Do not provide passwords or authentication codes. If the task extends beyond what you agreed to share, pause and contact the provider instead of assuming a phone makes the exposure less significant.
Handle display and connection problems honestly
If text is cut off, answer options cannot be selected or an upload stalls, record the stage and contact the provider through its official route. Do not guess hidden answer labels or submit a random option merely to advance. Avoid switching devices midway unless the instructions or support team permit it.
For a useful problem report, note the study reference, device category, browser and visible error. Do not capture confidential questions unless allowed. Read unmoderated task guidance for failure handling. A technical issue may affect completion, so describe what was actually submitted rather than asserting that the provider received the whole task.
Finish before switching attention
Allow the final submission or recording upload to complete. Look for a receipt or dashboard state and keep a permitted reference. A browser tab closing, an animation ending or a points estimate appearing is not necessarily payment confirmation. Check the provider's definitions before recording an activity as approved or paid.
Use the payout guide if the reward terms are unfamiliar. Scoutela provides free public previews and paid provider details and application access under current plans; it does not control mobile compatibility or payment. Choose device requirements from the original provider and evaluate each new activity independently, even when an earlier survey worked well on the same phone.
Common questions
Can I complete every online study on a phone?
No. Follow the study's permitted device and software requirements.
Does desktop view make my phone a desktop device?
Do not assume so. A display setting does not establish compliance with the provider's device requirement.
Can I move a survey to my laptop halfway through?
Only when the provider allows it. Ask about session and recording continuity before switching.
