Understand the research activity
A game playtest asks you to help a team understand an experience. That can involve finding a control, interpreting an objective or describing how a first session feels. It is different from assuming you will be paid simply for spending time in any game. Read the study's task, stage of development and required response.
PlaytestCloud's reward guidance describes spoken feedback and a post-test survey in its process. Follow the invitation for the particular activity. It does not establish that every playtest provider uses those steps or that your preferred game has an open study.
Check eligibility and equipment
Read the device, operating system, country, age and gaming-experience requirements. A researcher might need someone unfamiliar with a title or someone with specific experience. Neither means you should adjust your history to appear more suitable. State what you actually play, on which devices and how recently.
Check installation instructions and the official destination before downloading a test build or recorder. Allow time for setup if required. Shared devices may expose another person's notifications or accounts, so agree boundaries before recording. The screen-sharing privacy checklist helps you prepare the screen without exposing unrelated information during the activity.
Explain what you are experiencing
When spoken feedback is requested, describe what you expect, what you try and what happens. You do not need professional design vocabulary. Hypothetical example: you tap a symbol expecting an inventory, discover a settings menu and then search for a different route. Explaining that expectation makes the interaction understandable.
Avoid filling every moment with commentary if doing so prevents you from following instructions. Do not manufacture confusion, rehearse enthusiastic reactions or hide a genuine problem to look skilled. The usability testing guide explains why concrete observations matter. Your task is to participate honestly, not to prove that you are an expert player.
Handle onboarding and costs separately
Check whether an onboarding or qualification activity is paid before completing it. PlaytestCloud's guidance identifies its onboarding as unpaid. Do not apply the main invitation's incentive to that separate step or assume passing onboarding creates a guaranteed stream of tests.
PlaytestCloud's participation-cost page states that its playtesters do not need a subscription and that real in-game purchases are not reimbursed. Those are its terms. Before any test asks you to spend money, clarify the requirement and reimbursement in writing; do not infer reimbursement from a game's purchase button appearing during a recording.
Complete the whole brief
Check the requested gameplay period, assigned tasks, recording upload and any final questions. A game session ending is not necessarily the end of the study. If the game crashes or the recorder fails, follow the provider's troubleshooting instructions and report the stage reached. Do not claim a complete recording when you cannot confirm one exists.
Avoid repeatedly replaying a first-impression task unless instructed. Familiarity can change what the researcher is trying to observe. Keep a permitted participation reference rather than confidential screenshots or game assets. Read unmoderated task guidance for a deliberate finish and an accurate record of submission status.
Evaluate the actual invitation
PlaytestCloud says the reward is stated in the invitation and describes no payout threshold in that process. Confirm your own invitation's amount, method and completion conditions. Do not convert one offer into an expected weekly income or assume another provider has the same rules. Being an enthusiastic gamer does not establish selection.
Scoutela helps discover paid research; public previews are free and provider details and application access are paid under current plans. Providers decide eligibility and incentives. Direct recruitment routes may also exist. Choose an activity whose feedback requirements and privacy boundaries suit you, and keep discovery subscription costs separate from a playtest provider's participation rules.
Common questions
Is playtesting the same as a game-testing job?
A participant study has its own invitation and feedback terms. It does not by itself create an ongoing job or paid schedule.
Do I need to buy items inside the game?
Do not assume so. Follow the study instructions and clarify costs first; PlaytestCloud says real purchases are not reimbursed.
Can I play silently?
Only if the brief permits it. Some playtests require spoken feedback and additional questions.
